How to choose a dessert truck for your event

By Sugar Rush Truck. Published , updated .

In short: Choose a dessert truck by checking its food hygiene rating, public liability insurance, allergen information, how quickly it serves a queue, whether it can serve alcohol legally at your venue, and exactly what it needs on site. Ask for a written quote that lists hours, travel and what is included.

A dessert truck can be the best part of an event or a bottleneck with a logo on it. These are the questions that separate the two. They apply to any truck, including ours.

1. Is the business properly registered and insured?

Ask for the food hygiene rating displayed by the local authority and for proof of public liability insurance. Event venues and councils often ask for both, so having them ready saves you a scramble later.

2. How fast does it serve a queue?

Look at the menu. A long menu slows service. A short, practised menu moves faster. Sugar Rush Truck caps its shakes and hot chocolates at five items each for exactly this reason. Ask any truck how many serves per hour it can manage for your guest count and be wary of vague answers.

3. What does it need from the venue?

Check the pitch size, a flat and safe surface, vehicle access and whether power or water is needed. Raise these with your venue early, because some halls and fields restrict vehicles.

4. Can it serve alcohol at your event?

Not every truck, and not every venue. Alcohol needs a premises licence at the venue or a Temporary Event Notice, and everyone served must be 18 or over. Read our guide to alcohol licensing for events.

5. How does it handle allergies?

Every food business must be able to tell you about the 14 major allergens in what it serves. Ask for allergen information in advance, tell the truck about allergies in your guest list and be specific.

6. What is included in the quote?

A good quote lists the date, hours, location, travel, guest numbers, menu, who pays at the hatch and what happens if the weather turns. Get it in writing.

7. Does it suit all your guests?

If your guests range from toddlers to grandparents, a menu with kids minis, hot drinks, a cold treat and an optional adults bar covers more people than a single product truck.
